Peter originally came from Bethsaida and lived in Capernaum, which boasted plentiful springs and allowed for excellent irrigation. It was also the center of a vigorous fishing enterprise. Galilee was a relatively affluent district at that time. It was said, “If you want to be wise, go south (to Judea), but if you want to be rich go north (to Galilee).” Then, too, Peter was no ordinary workingman.
